01-04-2009 08:22 | GENETIC BASIS OF MEDICINE

we would like to draw your attention to the stipend program that supports the BALTIC SUMMER SCHOOL 2009. This year’s topic is GENETIC BASIS OF MEDICINE. It will take place from the 07th – 25th September 2009 in Kiel, with the theoretical course (07.09. – 18.09.2009 ) followed by the laboratory course (07.09. – 18.09.2009) (http://www.balticsummerschool.net/)

The course will have a focus on emerging approaches and technologies for a population-based understanding of the genetic variants that cause human disease. Aspects of translation into pathophysiology, ethical considerations and practical genetic medicine will be covered in separate sessions.

We have gathered a high-profile meeting faculty including Bruce Budowle , Ivo Gut , Chris Mathew, Dan Frank, Hans Lehrach, Jan Korbel, Manolis Dermitzakis, who will closely interact with the students.

A theoretical course will be followed by a condensed practical part, which covers most aspects of the field ranging from transgenic technologies to genotyping methods and next generation sequencing applications. A special focus will be the bioinformatical handling and mining of huge biological data sets.

The Baltic Summer School is supported by the EU under the Marie Curie Program which has a special focus on young scientists with research experience at the late phase of their PhD studies as well as at the medical specialist or post–doc levels (or an equivalent academic training). For such researchers participation fee will be taken over by EU as well as free accommodation. Stipends to support travel are available under the program. They are granted on an individual basis upon application, taking into account the cheapest travel connections. A maximum of 75 BSS 2009–stipends will be offered for the theoretical course and 20 BLC 2009–stipends will be offered for the laboratory course. (More information and registration under http://www.balticsummerschool.net )
